The man who bought the license plate number “1” appeared in Abu Dhabi on suspicion of fraud.
The Abu Dhabi Punishable Misconduct Court on Tuesday heard a case of a man of Arab descent who is charged with writing a check for an amount not in his account. Using an unsecured check, the accused tried to pay for the car sign he won with the number “1” at an auction held last year.
The man pleaded guilty.
“I took part in an auction organized by the Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters and Emirates Auction last November, and provided a fake check, knowing in advance that I did not have the necessary funds,” he said during interrogation.
The defendant also admitted that he planned to resell the license plate for an amount exceeding 31 million dirhams ($ 8.44 million), and then pay the money to the organizers of the auction.
