The first international exhibition of the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi in 2019, Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age: masterpieces from the Louvre Museum and the Leiden Collection, opens on February 14.
The first international exhibition of the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum in 2019, Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age: masterpieces from the Louvre Museum and the Leiden Collection, will collect paintings and drawings by Dutch masters Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Vermeer and their contemporaries. The opening will take place on February 14, 2019. The exhibition will tell about Rembrandt’s artistic journey in Leiden and Amsterdam and his relationships with competitors and peers, including Jan Vermeer, Jan Leavens, Ferdinand Bol, Karel Fabrizius, Gerard Dow, Frans van Mieris and Frans Hals.
During the Golden Age, the Dutch Republic established itself as a world leader in trade, science and art. Against this background of cultural exchange, research and discoveries, the exhibition will reveal the artistic traditions that prevailed in Leiden and the Netherlands during this period, including the development of a new school of artists called fijnschilders (masters of fine painting), known for their exquisitely presented scenes from everyday life .
The exhibition will feature 22 paintings and drawings from the entire career of Rembrandt and his workshop - from his early famous series of allegorical painting of feelings that demonstrate the artist’s youthful ingenuity and experimentation with expressions, composition and color during his Leyden period, to later works created in Amsterdam, including sensitive portraits, the famous self-portrait, Self-portrait with shaded eyes. and Minerva in his office (both from the Leiden collection), his monumental historical painting of the goddess Minerva. These works are presented next to the paintings of other artists from the artistic circle of Rembrandt, demonstrating the impact that this wonderful group of artists had on each other's works.
For this unusual occasion Girl at the Virginiel Jan Vermeer (Leiden Collection), and Lace maker (Museum of the Louvre), painted on canvas from one roll, for the first time in 300 years will hang next to each other in the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
