UAE airports will introduce electronic boarding pass system

Passengers of two international airports in the United Arab Emirates will soon be able to board a flight using a boarding pass with a two-dimensional barcode sent by SMS to a cell phone instead of a traditional paper boarding pass. Abu Dhabi International Airport and Sharjah International Airport will be among the 1,400 airports in the world where the Barcode Boarding Pass (BCBP) electronic boarding pass system will be introduced.

The transition to the electronic type of coupons initiated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is planned to be fully completed by the end of 2012, The National newspaper reports with reference to Air Transport World magazine. BCBP will send a boarding pass with a barcode via SMS message to the passenger’s cell phone, eliminating the need to print a paper version at the airport. Passengers with only carry-on baggage will be able to go through customs immediately. Passengers with luggage will only need to hand over their luggage. As for the largest airport in the UAE, Dubai International Airport, its management has not yet announced plans for implementing BCBP.
