Christian Dior came up with the first Rouge Dior lipstick in 1953, wanting to "dress a woman's smile." Was the same desire inspired to create this collection?
Peter Philips: In I like the expression "dress a female smile." It can tell a lot about the House of Dior, Christian Dior and how women saw him. Lipstick often goes hand in hand with the image. But Dior did not see the image. He saw smiles, emotions and friends. I always come back to this starting point when I work on my collections and campaigns. And the essence of the campaign is best conveyed by Natalie Portman and her energetic, cheerful nature.
Sometimes you say that Dior’s color is not just an indicator - it’s a garden that blooms from season to season ...
Peter Philips: The color for Christian Dior was everything. The beginning was laid by mother Dior's love for gardens and flowers. Then in 1930 his art gallery appeared. Since 1947, he began to create his first collections, which fell on a difficult historical period. He wanted to bring color, femininity, light to the world - his shows were accompanied by fireworks, and his clothes and make-up were distinguished by a riot of colors. In 1949, he launched the first Dior lipstick in his Colifichets boutique on Montaigne Avenue. Since then, the House of Dior has always sought to cultivate colors, like gardens.
When you think about lipstick, which women come to mind?
Peter Philips: Women with a strong character, courageous, independent and sensual. I always remember a photograph of Erwin Blumenfeld, where the model's facial features, Gene Patchett, are lit to highlight red lips, one eye and a front sight. Lipstick is the personification of sensuality, sometimes sexual attractiveness, but at the same time, it can build a wall between people.
What can lipstick say about a woman?
Peter Philips: This is a very important part of the image of a woman whose nature is contradictory. Lips can speak or be silent when the eyes do not hide emotions. We listen to the lips and read through the eyes. The ambiguity of the word "rouge" also plays a role, which in French means both lipstick as an object, and the color itself is a color that is a symbol of passion.
Some women think that bright lipstick of a saturated shade does not suit them.
Peter Philips: I would advise them to try. This is the beauty of makeup - you can apply it, rinse and start over. The only risk is that you can fall in love with your own look. What is the difference between the color palette of the first Rouge Dior lipsticks created 50 years ago and the colors of the new collection? Peter Philips: The color palette has become more diverse - thanks to an extremely diverse selection of pigments, an amazing improvement in the formula and an increase in the number of women who want more and more shades.
What are your favorite colors?
Peter Philips: I like 964, classic matte burgundy. The color is very saturated, ideal for autumn. Also 756, fresh coral, and 080, Red Smile, are Natalie Portman's lipstick, a new note in contemporary red. Matte pink is a strong color. And, for example, 670 is for women with a sense of humor who are not afraid to express themselves and enjoy life. Then “Poison” is a dark cherry that I used to show Autumn-Winter 2016/2017. This color has become a real hit.
What kind of women suits Extreme Matte Shades?
Peter Philips: I think these four shades are for those who love life. They are ideal for women who love fashion, brightness, who want to show themselves relaxed and strong. Remember the old slogan "Be brave with Dior!".
Dior women have never been shy to try the boldest shades. I also needed shades for filming and shows. Therefore, I made sure that the collection also included purple, black, gray and blue shades. If a woman has endurance and self-confidence, these colors do not scream, but harmoniously merge with her image.
In this collection, for the first time, Rouge Dior lipstick has the final matte finish.
Peter Philips: As soon as I started working on the color palette, I immediately realized that I needed saturated matte red. I am incredibly glad that we were able to create 10 shades of this color. It is believed that matte lipstick is not suitable for everyone ... Peter Philips: Try it, and you can no longer refuse it! We not only give you cutting-edge colors, but also consider ourselves experts in creating formulas. These 10 lipsticks have an ultra-comfortable formula - the color is not only matte, but also radiant.
How much does a lip liner help?
Peter Philips: It depends on situation. For classic, perfectly defined lips, I use a contour pencil to adjust the shape, and put a pencil on my lips as a base for lipstick. To create a more laid-back look, you can apply one lipstick, dab it with a napkin and lightly wipe the contour with a cotton swab. You will get the effect of incompleteness, which will give your image sensuality and sexuality.
They say you need to choose between eyes and lips ...
Peter Philips: For a long time, this was a general rule, but today women do not comply with it. They do what they wish. It all depends on their mood, sense of style and what they are looking for.
How to choose the perfect shade?
Peter Philips: The best way to choose your own shade is to try different colors and textures. I advise you to have a few “classic” lipsticks and slightly less traditional shades in your arsenal and not be afraid to be bolder.
